What Does Louisiana Sports Betting Mean For Sports Fans?

Get ready Louisiana sports fans! Sports betting is on its way to the Bayou State, and there are plenty of ways to get in on the action.

Louisiana has a proud sports history, and sporting events play a big role in the state’s cultural experience. The New Orleans Saints have a very passionate fan base, and those fans will be ready to place wagers backing their team once sports betting becomes available. The Saints won their lone Super Bowl back in 2009, and they have made the playoffs in each of the last four seasons.

Louisiana is also home to some of the most dedicated college football fans in the country. LSU won the College Football Playoff in 2019, and they have won four national championships in their history. It is certainly an exciting time to be a Louisiana sports fan, and sports betting will only increase the enthusiasm.

How We Got Here

In the November 2020 election, voters were given the opportunity to vote on legalizing sports betting in their respective counties, or as Louisiana calls them, parishes.  In the end, 56 out of 64 parishes voted yes on the legalization, and thus approved sports betting to launch in those locations. Earlier this year, Gov. John Bel Edwards legalized sports betting by signing Senate Bill 142 and Senate Bill 247 into law. Now, the Gaming Control Board must set the rules and regulations for the industry within the state. This process takes some time, but the hope is that sports betting will be launched in either the fall of 2021 or spring of 2022.

Things To Know Before Placing a Mobile Wager

In order to place a wager on a sporting event, bettors must be located within one of the 56 parishes that approved sports betting. The eight parishes that will not have this option are:

  • Caldwell
  • Catahoula
  • Franklin
  • LaSalle
  • Sabine
  • Union
  • West Carroll
  • Winn

Geofencing technology will be used to restrict people from betting on sports when physically within a parish where it is not yet authorized. If you live in one of those eight parishes, you can still place a wager by driving into one of the approved parishes.

How Do I Sign Up?

With up to 41 online licenses available, it is expected that many of the top sportsbooks in the country will soon become available in Louisiana. Regulated and licensed online sportsbooks include FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, and more.  Once sports betting is launched in Louisiana, bettors will have the chance to bet straight from their mobile phone.  Mobile betting apps offer sports fans a convenient way to place their bets from the comfort of their own home, at the local sports bar, or at the stadium.  In order to sign up and start betting, follow these steps:

  • Find the online sportsbook app (such as FanDuel) in the App Store and download it to your mobile device. When downloading apps like FanDuel or DraftKings, be sure to select the sportsbook app and not the Daily Fantasy Sports app.
  • Register with the sportsbook by providing basic information and verifying your age and location (bettors must be 21-years-old or older and within one of the approved parishes). It may also ask for information like your Social Security number and physical address. You will not need to be a Louisiana resident in order to wager with Louisiana sportsbooks.
  • Deposit your desired amount of funds into your account using a debit card, credit card, or e-wallet such as PayPal.
  • Place your bets!

What Can I Bet On?

Bettors in Louisiana will have plenty of options when placing a wager. The estimated time frame places the launch right in the middle of the NFL, NBA, and college football seasons. Other leagues that are currently listed on mobile sportsbooks include MLB, MLS, college basketball, NHL, English Premier League, and more. There is truly something for everyone.

Bettors will also have options when it comes to the types of bets they choose to make. Moneyline bets, points spreads, and game totals are usually the primary wagers available on most major sportsbook apps. But if you dig deeper, you can also find plenty of player props, along with both player and team futures. In addition, if you are wanting a more high-reward wager, consider trying a parlay.

Sportsbook Promos

The sports betting industry is growing rapidly in the United States, and it is becoming a very competitive market. Many sportsbooks promote bonus offers to new users in hopes of standing out among the competition. These bonus offers and promotions can help to add winnings to your bankroll. When registering your account, keep an eye out for any promotions that may be available.
