Louisiana has a proud sports history, and sporting events play a big role in the state’s cultural experience.  With one of the more passionate fan bases in the NFL, the New Orleans Saints bring a ton of energy and excitement to the state.  That excitement has been enhanced with the legalization of sports betting in Louisiana.

In-person wagering has already started, and mobile betting is in the works.  With up to 41 online licenses available, it is expected that many of the top sportsbooks in the country will soon become available in Louisiana.  Regulated and licensed online sportsbooks include FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, and more.  Once online sports betting is launched in Louisiana, bettors will have the chance to bet straight from their mobile phone.

The Saints are sure to be a popular team to bet on in Louisiana, so let’s take a look at some tips and tricks to keep in mind when getting started with online sports betting.

How To Download Sports Betting Apps

Creating accounts with mobile sportsbooks is a quick and easy process.  In order to start betting, follow these steps to create your account(s):

  • Search for online sportsbook apps (such as FanDuel and PointsBet) in the App Store and download them to your mobile device.  When downloading apps like FanDuel or DraftKings, be sure to select the sportsbook app and not the Daily Fantasy Sports app.
  • Register with the sportsbook by providing basic information and verifying your age and location.  Bettors will need to be 21 years of age or older and located within one of the approved parishes.  You will not need to be a Louisiana resident or have a Louisiana license in order to place online wagers in Louisiana.
  • Deposit your desired amount of funds into your account using a debit card, credit card, or e-wallet such as PayPal.
  • Place your bets!

Odds Boosts And Promos

Various popular sportsbooks will have bonus offers available for Louisiana bettors when they launch.  These promos are recommended for both experienced and new bettors, as they can help to add winnings to your bankroll.  Many of these deals feature either a deposit bonus or risk-free bet for the initial wager.  That way, if you initial bet goes south, you have some insurance in your back pocket.

What Kind Of Bets Are Available?

There are many ways to bet on the New Orleans Saints.  NFL games offer a variety of different wagers, and bettors can pick and choose which type of bet they prefer.

Moneyline/Straight Bets

Also referred to as a straight bet, a moneyline bet is when you simply pick who you think will win the game.  Regardless of how close the game is, if you bet on the Saints to win and they do, then you win money.  Simple as that.

Points Spread Bets

Things get a little more interesting with a points spread bet.  In this case, just winning the game is not going to cut it.  In NFL games, one team is usually favored over their opponent, and they are favored to win by a certain amount of points.  For example, consider a game in which the Saints are listed as favorites at -5.5.  In order to win the bet, the Saints must not only win the game, but win by at least six points or more.  Thus covering the spread.  On the other side, if the Saints are listed as underdogs at +5.5, then they must either win the game OR lose by five points or less.

Game Totals

Game totals refer to the total amount of points scored in the game.  You can place a bet on the amount of points to either go OVER or stay UNDER the listed total.  For example, consider a game in which the Saints are playing against the Panthers and the total listed is 42.5.  If you bet on the OVER, you will need the two teams to combine for at least 43 points in the game to win your bet.  If you bet on the UNDER, then you would need the two teams to combine for 42 points or less to win.  Many sportsbooks also offer totals for quarters and halves as well.

Player Prop Bets

Player props focus on a single player in a game.  In NFL games, a popular player prop is total passing yards by quarterbacks.  For example, bettors can bet on Jameis Winston to throw over or under his listed total of 212.5 passing yards.

Parlay Bets

Parlays are a fun way to potentially earn a bigger payout.  In a parlay, bets include multiple picks on at least two different games.  Parlays can be made on the moneyline, points spread, or game totals.  For example, if you put together a two-team moneyline parlay involving the Saints and the Packers, you would need both teams to win their respective games in order to receive a payout.

Some sportsbooks like FanDuel and DraftKings now offer same-game parlays.  This is when you can put multiple picks from a single game into a parlay.  These types of bets also allow you to enter player props into your parlay.

Futures Bets

A futures bet is different from placing a bet on a single game.  NFL futures involve team outcomes that occur over the course of the season.  These include a team’s chances to make the playoffs, win their respective division or conference, or win the Super Bowl.  DraftKings currently lists the Saints at +400 odds to win the NFC South, +1400 to win the NFC, and +3000 to win the Super Bowl.

Another popular NFL futures bet is the total amount of wins a team will have in a season.  Prior to the 2021-22 NFL season, DraftKings listed New Orleans’ win total at 9.

How Odds Work

Odds and lines may vary across different sportsbooks, so it’s important to understand how to read them in order to find which bets are worth taking.  In NFL games, the most popular sportsbooks display three different options: moneyline, spread, and game totals.

The chart below shows the current odds on DraftKings for the Saints’ upcoming game against the Seahawks.

 SpreadMoneylineTotal
Saints-3 (-115)-170Over 44 (-110)
Seahawks+3 (-105)+150Under 44 (-110)

DraftKings has New Orleans listed as 3-point favorites.  That means their line appears as -3.  Anytime you see a minus sign before the spread, that team is favored.  Conversely, if you see a plus-sign, that means the team is the underdog.  In this case, the Seahawks are the underdogs at +3.

When it comes to the moneyline, the team that is favored will also have a minus-sign listed before their odds.  The number listed indicates how much you would have to bet in order to win $100.  The New Orleans moneyline is -170.  In this situation, you would have to bet $170 to win $100.

On the other side, the Seattle moneyline is +150.  The plus-sign indicates how much you would win if you bet $100.  So, if you bet $100 on the Seahawks to win and they do, you would win $150.

The same thinking can be applied to the odds on the total.

If you are looking for other bets like player props, futures, and same game parlays, just follow the menu options listed on each sportsbook.

The great thing about mobile sportsbooks is that no matter how much you want to wager, you are able to see how much the bet would payout before you place it.  That way, you know exactly what your bet looks like before locking it in.

No matter what you are looking to bet when it comes to Saint games, it is recommended that you shop around to see the various bets that are available.  Find out which ones you like best, then lock them in and watch the action unfold.
