Saints Vs. Panthers Week 2 Player Props To Consider: New Orleans Looks To Keep McCaffrey In Check

The New Orleans Saints play their first divisional game of the 2021 season Sunday afternoon against the Carolina Panthers (Fox, 1:00 p.m. ET).  Both teams are looking for a 2-0 start on the young season, and there are many ways to get in on the betting action.

The Saints are listed as 4-point favorites on DraftKings, but player props offer bettors more ways to have a stake in the game.  These types of bets focus on a single player’s performance.

Let’s take a look at player props available for some notable players on both the Saints and Panthers in this matchup:

Jameis Winston Props

The Saints opened up a big lead on the Packers and never looked back in their 38-3 victory. Because of that, not much was asked of Jameis Winston.  He threw just 20 passes on the day for 148 yards. He stayed well UNDER his total passing yards prop, which closed at 260.5 on DraftKings.

The bookmakers have adjusted his total downward to 236.5 on DraftKings (OV -115, UN -115) for this week’s matchup against Carolina.  Winston’s total is a bit higher over at FanDuel, where it is listed at 238.5 with -114 juice on either side.

Of his 20 pass attempts in Week 1, five went for touchdowns. He easily cashed OVER 1.5 passing touchdowns, and the same total is given this week on DraftKings.  If you think Winston will deliver 2+ touchdowns through the air again, consider the OVER at -115 odds. UNDER 1.5 can be taken laying the same juice.

The Panthers didn’t have the most daunting pass defense a year ago, as they ranked 18th in the league, allowing an average of 239.1 passing yards per game. Rookie Zach Wilson put up 258 yards and two touchdowns against Carolina in his NFL debut last week.

Christian McCaffrey Props

Christian McCaffrey is one of the most electrifying players in the NFL. He was able to play only three games last season due to ankle and shoulder injuries. McCaffrey returned to the field last week and ran the ball 21 times for 98 yards (4.7 yards per carry).

McCaffrey’s total rushing yards prop is listed at 66.5 on DraftKings (OV -115, UN -115).  McCaffrey has never reached 67 rushing yards against the Saints in his career.

In seven career games against New Orleans, McCaffrey has rushed for a total of 193 yards on 60 carries. That averages out to just 3.2 yards per carry, well below his career average of 4.6. He has exceeded 60 yards just once in those seven games (64 in 2019).

The Saints allowed the fewest rushing yards in the league last week (43).  Given their history of stifling McCaffrey, consider backing the UNDER on his total rushing yards prop.

Touchdown Props

Both the Saints and Panthers have some offensive firepower.  Sam Darnold has a plethora of weapons, including McCaffrey, DJ Moore, and Robby Anderson.

On the other side, Winston has Alvin Kamara out of the backfield, as well as speedster Marquez Calloway on the outside. Super-utility man Taysom Hill can also be used in creative ways.

The total for this game is set at 44.5 on FanDuel (OV -106, UN -114). The OVER has cashed in each of the last five meetings between these teams in Carolina. If that trend is going to continue, there have to be touchdowns.

Here is a look at some touchdown props available for this game through FanDuel:
