Saints vs. Falcons Betting Odds: Saints Open As Road Favorites In Week 1

The New Orleans Saints will open the 2022 NFL season on the road against the Atlanta Falcons. Neither team made the playoffs last season, but fans of both teams have high hopes for 2022. Despite being on the road, the Saints have opened as 3.5- or 4-point favorites over the Falcons on Louisiana sports betting apps.

Both teams will be in a transition year this season. After 16 years as the head coach of the Saints, Sean Payton retired during the offseason. Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen was named the new head coach. As for the Falcons, longtime QB Matt Ryan got traded to the Indianapolis Colts during the offseason.

The advantage will go to whoever does a better job adjusting to their new reality. But who will that be?

.500 record or bust: New Orleans Saints season wins total

New Orleans Saints (9-8 SU, 9-8 ATS)

The 2021 NFL season was a challenging year for the Saints. With the retirement of Drew Brees, the team had a huge question mark at quarterback — and it still does. Jameis Winston showed some promise, but he only played seven games last season because of a season-ending knee injury.

Trevor Siemian, Taysom Hill, and rookie Ian Book all got starts the rest of the way, with no one playing well enough to lock down the position.

Rather than draft someone, the Saints appear set to give Winston another shot this year. The return of wide receiver Michael Thomas and rookie WR Chris Olave should make Winston’s job easier. RB Alvin Kamara will play a significant role in the offense again.

But the key to the season and in Week 1 will likely be the defense, as it was the league’s No. 4 scoring defense in 2021. Can it continue to play at a high level and give the offense a chance to establish a new identity?

Atlanta Falcons (7-10 SU, 6-10-1 ATS)

Last season, the Falcons took a step in the right direction in their first year under head coach Arthur Smith improving from 4-12 to 7-10. But it’s the dawn of a new era for Atlanta this season. Ryan got traded to the Colts, and Marcus Mariota got signed to be the new QB1. However, while Mariota will probably start, he may not be the starter for long if rookie Desmond Ridder has an impressive training camp.

Ridder had a stellar college career at Cincinnati but was not viewed as someone ready to start in the NFL coming out of college, though analysts are not always right. But if Mariota struggles, Ridder could get his shot sooner rather than later.

This season, the offense will be minus Calvin Ridley as he serves a one-year suspension for betting on NFL games, but the team has high hopes for its first-round pick, WR Drake London. This season, TE Kyle Pitts could become a more significant part of the offense, and rookie RB Tyler Allgeier is a strong dark horse candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Betting Analysis

Winston is not a great quarterback, but he has proven to be capable. The same can’t be said about Mariota. Since the Falcons’ offense will be searching for a new identity, look for the Saints to try to control the game with their defense.

Our Pick: Saints -3.5 and under 42.5
