Packers Vs. Saints Week 1 Player Props To Consider

The New Orleans Saints start their 2021 season against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday afternoon (Fox, 4:25 p.m. ET).  There is a ton of excitement surrounding this matchup.  That excitement can be enhanced with a little betting action.

While Green Bay is a 3.5-point favorite as of Friday, bet down from -4.5 the line was adjusted to after the decision to move the game from New Orleans to Jacksonville, player props offer different ways to bet the game.  These types of bets focus on a single player’s performance.

Let’s take a look at some player props available for both the Saints and Packers in this matchup:

Jameis Winston Props

You never know what you are going to get from Jameis Winston.  He is a bit of a wild card every time he drops back to pass.  Winston led the NFL in passing yards with the Buccaneers back in 2019, but he also led the league with 30 interceptions.  His passing yards total for his first start in a Saints uniform is listed at 260.5 on DraftKings, with -115 juice on either side of the prop.

Winston is used to throwing a lot of passes.  He threw a league-high 683 in 2019, or nearly 40 pass attempts per game.  DraftKings has Winston’s pass attempts total at 35.5 (OV -120, UN -110) for Sunday’s matchup against the Packers.

It will be interesting to see what Sean Payton’s game plan will be offensively.  Will he want Winston to throw a lot?  Or will he try to slow the game down with the run?  The Saints played at a slow pace last season, and they may opt for a similar offensive attack in hopes of keeping the ball out of Aaron Rodgers’ hands.

Aaron Rodgers Props

Aaron Rodgers’ passing yards total for this matchup is set at 276.5 (-115) on DraftKings.  He exceeded this number in 10 of his 16 regular season starts in 2020, but the Saints had the fifth-best passing defense a year ago, allowing 217.0 yards per game through the air.  Rodgers threw for 283 yards in Week 3 against New Orleans last season.

Rodgers averaged just shy of 33 pass attempts per game in 2020.  His pass attempts total for this game is listed at 37.5 on DraftKings.  Think he will throw at least 38 passes?  Consider the OVER at -115 odds.  Don’t think he will reach 38 pass attempts?  Roll with the UNDER laying the same juice.

In his 2020 MVP season, Rodgers threw 48 touchdown passes in 16 regular-season games.  If you are eyeing a potential passing touchdowns prop with Rodgers, you can bet the OVER 2.5 at +145 odds on DraftKings.

Running Back Props

Focusing on rushing yards for running back props is common, but Alvin Kamara’s receiving props could be worth a look.  There is a good chance that as Winston adjusts to leading the offense, he will look to Kamara out of the backfield.  Kamara is one of the best pass-catching running backs in the NFL.  He has hauled in 80+ passes in each of his four seasons in the league.

Kamara’s OVER 5.5 receptions prop is going for +120 on DraftKings.  The plus-money presents solid value, and Kamara reached six receptions in five of the first seven games to open the 2020 season.  The absence of Michael Thomas could also lead to more targets for Kamara.

Green Bay’s Aaron Jones is more of a run-first running back.  He occasionally catches passes out of the backfield, but not to the extent that Kamara does.  Jones’ rushing yards total is listed at 64.5 (OV -110, UN -120) on FanDuel.  Jones reached 65 rushing yards or more in nine of the 16 regular-season games last year.  In addition, he reached that number in each of the first four games to begin the season.
