For example, a bettor wishing to bet on the Yankees to win the World Series would be better suited to place his or her bet through Caesars. The +600 odds on Caesars are much more appealing than the +500 odds on DraftKings or FanDuel.

The Atlanta Braves won the World Series last fall, and after starting the season at +1000 odds, they are currently +1100 to repeat as champions on DraftKings.

Where Can You Bet On MLB Games In Louisiana?

Mobile sports betting on tribal land is exclusive, meaning bettors in these locations can only use the partnered sportsbooks in the area and not other commercial sportsbooks. Paragon is the only casino in Louisiana not regulated through the state.

How Are MLB Odds Calculated?

When betting on Major League Baseball, popular wagers include moneyline, point spread, and totals. The total number of possible bets on a given game goes far beyond these three categories, but understanding how these three betting staples work is crucial to a solid sports betting strategy.

Before placing a wager on an MLB game, it’s important to understand how the odds work and how they are calculated. In this example, consider a game in which the Houston Astros are playing against their AL West rivals, the Texas Rangers. The odds may look something like this:

How MLB Moneylines Are Calculated

Moneyline bets refer to who you think will win the game. Simply pick the straight-up winner, and your bet pays off at the odds posted on the moneyline if your team is victorious. The odds for the favored team are denoted with a minus sign, while the underdog is listed with a plus sign. Oddsmakers consider a number of different scenarios to create moneyline odds. These include pitching matchups, injuries, scheduling, recent trends, and matchups. In this scenario, the Rangers are the underdogs with +150 odds on the moneyline. This means that if you bet $100 on the Rangers to win, your bet would win $150 if they are victorious. Conversely, the Astros are listed as the favorites with -175 odds. This means that you would have to bet $175 to win $100 with a Houston victory.

How MLB Point Spreads Are Calculated

Point spreads are also referred to as “run lines” in baseball. Run lines are similar to point spreads in basketball or football. Much line moneyline bets, the favored team is listed with a minus sign while the underdog is listed with a plus sign. In the above example, bettors can take the Rangers (+1.5) runs, or the Astros (-1.5) runs. If you bet on the Astros (-1.5), you would need them to win by two or more runs in order to receive a payout. A 3-2 win would not cut it. On the other side, if you bet on the Rangers (+1.5), you would need the Rangers to either win the game outright or lose by just a single run in order to win your bet. 

How MLB Totals Are Calculated

A totals bet asks the bettor to simply choose whether the total number of combined runs scored by both teams will end up over or under a posted number. These types of bets are usually listed with -110 odds. Lines for totals bets are made using a variety of factors. Perhaps most notably, oddsmakers take into account pitching matchups. For example, if two aces are going toe-to-toe, the total will be listed lower. If two No. 4 starters are starting, then the total will be higher. In the above scenario, the totals bet for the Rangers-Astros tilt puts that number at 9.5 runs. Over bettors would need 10 or more combined runs to win their bet, while under bettors would need nine or fewer runs. 

MLB Futures Odds

A “futures bet” is what it implies. Rather than betting on a singular game, futures bets refer to the outcome at a point later in the season, and bettors get the entire season for the outcome to occur (or not). Popular MLB futures bets include World Series winner, American League winner, National League winner, team win totals (over/under), MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year. You can also bet on certain player statistics such as the player with the most home runs and most strikeouts. 

World Series futures bets are available at all times of the year at legal online sportsbooks. Bettors can now place their bets on who they think will win the 2022 World Series. The Dodgers have the best odds to win it all at +450 on DraftKings.

Prop bets involve betting on an event that happens within a game but isn’t directly connected with the final score. Prop bets available for a given MLB game can include totals wagers on one team’s total score, or betting on a pitcher to notch a certain number of strikeouts. Some additional examples of player props are how many home runs, RBIs, or total bases a particular player will have.

You can also bet on MLB player props for a series of games such as the World Series. Once the teams are set, you can bet on a long list of props across the duration of the MLB World Series instead of a singular game.

Residents in the legalized 55 parishes can now place their MLB bets in-person at physical retail sites as well as through mobile apps and desktop websites for sportsbooks partnered with Louisiana casinos.
