Point Spread Analysis And Pick
Coach Terry Bowden deserves a lot of credit for getting ULM headed in the right direction. The Warhawks were one of the worst teams in college football in 2020, and after not winning a single game last season, they are 4-6 so far this season. They’ve played a lot of competitive games, and even beat Liberty as 32-point underdogs back in October.
However, ULM’s trip to Baton Rouge on Saturday could be a tough one. The road has not been kind to the Warhawks this season. ULM is 0-4 SU and 0-4 ATS away from Monroe.
The offense has lacked big plays, and the offensive line is allowing too many defenders to reach the backfield. While the LSU defense has struggled with consistency, it should be able to limit the damage from the ULM offense. Part of that is because LSU has been playing disciplined football. The Tigers have done a good job of staying out of their own way, averaging the fewest penalty yards per game in all of college football (31.7). Look for LSU to stay disciplined in order to force ULM to make plays, which could put the Tigers in a favorable spot.
LSU battled hard against Alabama a few weeks ago, losing by six points as 29.5-point underdogs. Last week the Tigers lost an overtime game against upstart Arkansas. LSU’s last six games have been against top-25 teams, so it is much more battle-tested than ULM. After three straight losses, the Tigers should be raring to pick up a big win in this one.
Lay the points with LSU (-29).
Over/Under Analysis And Pick
Because the Tigers can still reach bowl eligibility with wins in their last two games, they will want to get out of this game with a win and their health. If the Tigers build a big lead, coach Ed Orgeron could ease off the gas in the second half. That could lead to more conservative play-calling with an emphasis on controlling the clock. Orgeron could also take some or most of his starters out of the game to make sure he has his top players healthy for next week’s showdown against Texas A&M.
On the other side, it’s tough to expect much from the Warhawk offense. ULM is averaging the fewest yards per game in the Sun Belt Conference (330.5). Explosive plays have been tough to come by, and things won’t get any easier against SEC competition.
It’s also worth noting that ULM visited Baton Rouge in 2010 and 2014, and failed to score in both matchups. They were outscored 82-0 in those two games.
In terms of the total, roll with the UNDER (57.5).
