NBA Postseason Underway: Pelicans vs. Spurs play-in betting odds and bonuses

Breakers vs. Philadelphia Stars: Sunday, April 17, 4 PM ET on USA Network

Betting odds from BetMGM Louisiana: Breakers -2.5 (-115); Total 43.5 (-115/-115)

If the fortunes of a football team are attached to the quarterback, then the Breakers will look to former Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings reserve QB Kyle Sloter to make this season a success. Sloter was the first pick the Breakers made in the USFL draft, and he’s considered one of the more seasoned passers in the league.

FanDuel Louisiana lists the Breakers at +550 to capture the USFL title, which is one of the shorter odds of the eight teams in the league. The Michigan Panthers and Tampa Bay Bandits are slight betting favorites at +450 before the season starts.

What Is The USFL?

The United States Football League is making a return. In the 1980s, the USFL was a spring/summer professional football league that stated an intention to eventually compete with the NFL. The league only survived for three seasons, though several outstanding future NFL players, like Hall of Famers Jim Kelly, Steve Young, and Reggie White, got their pro start in the USFL.

For the 2022 season, the USFL returns with several of the original team names, including the Breakers, who relocated from Boston in the first iteration of the league in 1983.

The USFL consists of eight teams split into two divisions and will feature a 10-game schedule followed by the playoffs. The USFL title game will be played in July. All regular-season games will be played in Birmingham for the 2022 season, to keep travel costs down.

Rule Differences: USFL vs. NFL

The league will feature a few exciting rules that you won’t see in the NFL.

The 3-Point Conversion

The USFL will offer teams a chance at a 0ne-point, two-point, or three-point conversion. The one-pointer is a typical extra-point kick, the two-point conversion is just like the NFL rule, but a three-point try will allow teams to try to get into the end zone from the 10-yard line. This wrinkle could make it easier for teams to make comebacks since they could accumulate nine points with a touchdown and successful conversion.

Alternate On-Side Kick Option

As reported by CBS Sports, the USFL is adding a very interesting rule for teams after they score. The scoring team can choose to try to convert a 4th-and-12 play from the 33-yard-line. If the team gains at least 12 yards on that one play, they keep the football. If not, the opposing team takes possession at that spot on the field.

OT Shootout

The biggest rules difference on the field between the USFL and NFL may be the overtime process. In the NFL, the team that wins the coin toss wins most of the time. If a team scores a TD in OT in the NFL, the game is over. Only if a field goal is kicked by the first team to possess the ball, does the other team also get a chance to score. The USFL is more democratic and exciting.

In the USFL, the overtime will feature a best-of-three scoring format in which each team gets the football at the opponent’s 2-yard-line at least twice. If the two teams are still tied after three attempts, OT in the USFL will become sudden death.

With the USFL OT rules, each team gets a chance to score and holds their fate in their own hands. That’s a big improvement over the controversial OT rules in the NFL.
