More than two years after it closed due to the punishing waters of Hurricane Laura, the Isle of Capri riverboat casino will return as the Horseshoe Lake Charles this winter.
Last week, Caesars Entertainment revealed that it would open the Horseshoe Lake Charles, branding it in line with other casino/resorts the company operates in other states. Caesars purchased the Isle of Capri in 2021, but had not set a timeline for reopening it. In August of 2021, it was announced that a land-based casino would replace the riverboat, and the Louisiana Gaming Control Board approved the plan.
The new casino will be a land-based venue with a gaming room, sportsbook, hotel, and resort amenities. It’s unclear whether Caesars will retain any of the riverboat heritage.
Isle of Capri Took a Ride
When Hurricane Laura made ground two years ago, rains and wind forced the Isle of Capri riverboat casino from its moorings. It ended up stuck beneath the Lake Charles Bridge in August of 2020, suffering hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. The accident occurred only two months after the Isle of Capri had re-opened following restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Mike Soileau of Gator 99.5 News, President & Chief Operating Officer of Caesars Entertainment Anthony Carano said in early August:
“Horseshoe Lake Charles, the exciting evolution of Isle of Capri, arrives this winter. The reimagining of our property in Lake Charles is part of Caesars Entertainment’s commitment to you, our loyal customers, and our community. It’s been an exciting process, and we couldn’t be happier to share it with all of you. Caesars Entertainment is honored and proud to be a part of Louisiana. We hope you’ll join us at Horseshoe Lake Charles and go all-in on a great time.”
Caesars Adds to Its Locations
Caesars also owns and operates Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City, outside of Shreveport. The gaming and hospitality company has Horseshoe resorts and casinos in no fewer than a dozen cities across the US, including Las Vegas, Baltimore, and Indianapolis.
According to the Caesars Entertainment website, Horseshoe Lake Charles will “include a WSOP Poker Room, all-new Caesars Sportsbook location, a completely redesigned hotel tower and culinary offerings including the award-winning Brew Brothers.”
Lake Charles a Destination for Gambling
Lake Charles is a popular destination for Louisiana residents seeking an in-state getaway. The region offers water, beaches, restaurants, and bars.
The Isle of Capri riverboat casino was owned by Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc., headquartered in Missouri. That company at one time operated 15 casinos in seven states in the United States.
Louisiana legalized sports betting in 2021, and launched its online sports betting market in January of 2022. Since sports became legal in the state, gaming revenue has soared. In June of 2022, the state became the 17th to exceed $1 billion in sports betting handle, and also set a national record for win rate, at 15%.
