How To Bet On The Super Bowl In Louisiana

In addition to a wide array of prop bets, the odds for the Super Bowl are much like any other game. Betting markets include point spread, moneyline, and total (over/under). For Super Bowl LV, the point spread favored the Kansas City Chiefs (-3) at the standard vig of -110, a total of 56, and a moneyline of -157. The Buccaneers’ moneyline was +138.

For Super Bowl LVI, set for Feb. 13, 2022, Louisiana sports bettors are expected to have a chance to cast their bets with a healthy list of legal sportsbooks, either online or at a casino or horse race track.

Fans can make futures bets on the Super Bowl for most of the year. Heading into the 2020 NFL season, the New Orleans Saints were tied for the third-shortest odds to win the Super Bowl at +1000. Without Drew Brees, the future Hall of Fame quarterback who retired this offseason, heading into the 2021 regular season, the Saints were no longer among the top favorites.

As of Oct. 7, 2021, here are odds from various sportsbooks for the top 10 betting choices to lift the Lombardi Trophy at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Super Bowl Sunday.

Cleveland Browns+1600+1400+1500+1400
New Orleans Saints +3000+4000+4000+4000

While there have been some adjustments through Week 4 of the NFL season, the top of the odds board remains similar at most sportsbooks. The Chiefs and the Buccaneers are the two favorites. The Chiefs are priced between +550 and +600. The reigning champion Buccaneers are between +500 and +650.

The next tier of teams has the Bills and Rams priced between +750 and +1100. The Saints saw their odds shortened to as low as +2000 after blowing out Green Bay in the season opener, but two losses in three games since then have seen those odds balloon to as high as +4100.

Kansas City Chiefs

With an offense as explosive as Kansas City’s, the Chiefs will always be in the conversation when it comes to Super Bowl contenders. After making several improvements to their offensive line during the offseason, it would not be shocking if the Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl for a third consecutive season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

With both starting units coming back, the Super Bowl champions are a good bet to make it back to the big game. One question is whether Tom Brady can keep performing at such a high level. There is no reason to think he cannot.

Buffalo Bills

Of all the teams in the AFC, the Bills may have the only offense explosive enough to keep up with the Chiefs. Assuming Josh Allen can pick up where he left off, the Bills will be a force to be reckoned with this season.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams have had a championship-caliber defense in recent years but have not had enough offense to go with it. But with the addition of quarterback Matthew Stafford, there is an excellent chance that will change.

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals are the league’s only 4-0 team and added a feather to their cap with a win over the Rams in Week 4. Quarterback Kyler Murray seems to be taking the next step in his development and is already on the short list of MVP candidates.

New Orleans Saints

With Brees at the helm of the offense, the Saints were a Super Bowl contender for years. Without him, it remains to be seen if the offense will be productive enough to be a contender. The tools are still in place, but can new quarterback Jameis Winston make the most of them?

Where Can I Bet On The Super Bowl In Louisiana

In June 2021, Gov. John Bel Edwards signed into law legislation that makes sports betting legal in 55 of the state’s 64 parishes. The legislation allows for 41 online sportsbooks and 20 retail sportsbooks. While a target launch date has not been set, sportsbooks are hoping to go live at some point during the 2021 NFL season. The Louisiana Gaming Control Board needs to implement rules before that happens.

Sportsbook Locations In Louisiana

Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville was the first retail sportsbook to open on Oct. 6, 2021.

Once sports betting fully launches, fans will be able to bet on the Super Bowl at any of the 19 casinos that granted a license. Those are expected to be 14 riverboat casinos, four racino horse tracks, and Harrah’s casino in New Orleans.

Many locations already have established relationships:

  • Caesars: Harrah’s Louisiana Downs, Harrah’s New Orleans, Horseshow Casino
  • FanDuel: Amelia Belle Casino, Evangeline Downs, Delta Downs, Sam’s Town, Treasure Chest Casino
  • Barstool: Boomtown Casino Bossier City and New Orleans, L’Auberge Casino Baton Rouge and Lake Charles, Margaritaville Resort Casino
  • Bally Bet: Eldorado
  • Golden Nugget: Golden Nugget Lake Charles
  • DraftKings: Belle of Baton Rouge, Hollywood Casino

Retail locations will be allowed two online ‘skins,’ but with several casinos owned by the same company, it is unlikely that each location will have two different online sportsbooks partners. There will also be betting kiosks located at bars and restaurants around the state.

History of New Orleans Saints Championships

In their early years, the Saints struggled to find success on the field. Prior to the 2000 season, the Saints had one division title to their name. Since then, they have won eight division titles, including the last four. They have been to the NFC Championship game three times but have only won once.

In their only trip to the Super Bowl, they beat the Indianapolis Colts, 31-17,  in Super Bowl XLIV in Miami.

Much of the success has come with Sean Payton as head coach and Brees as the quarterback. Other notable coaches and players during the team’s history include Bum Phillips, Jim Mora, Mike Ditka, Willie Roaf, and Morten Anderson.

NFL Super Bowl Odds And Betting

There are more ways to bet on the Super Bowl than any other game on the NFL schedule. For most of the calendar year, fans can place futures bets on the game by picking a winner.

A betting line for the game and odds for hundreds of prop bets (i.e., player production, who scores first, what the first score is, coin flip, etc.) typically do not get posted until after the NFC and AFC Championship games.

Check your favorite sportsbooks’ offerings when it comes to picking Super Bowl props.

What Is A Futures Bet?

A futures bet is a wager on the outcome of a future event. Examples of futures bets include a team to win the division, a team to win the conference championship, and a team to win the Super Bowl. Season win totals, where you can bet a team winning over or under a certain amount of games, is also a form of futures betting. There are also player-based futures markets, such as odds to win MVP or Rookie of the Year, as well as over/unders on individual stats such as passing yards and touchdowns.

Super Bowl futures odds are often posted shortly after the conclusion of the previous Super Bowl and come down once the conference championship games get played.

What Is A Prop Bet?

Prop bets, once predominantly for the Super Bowl but now available for most games in major sports, are wagering options not always tied directly to the outcome of the game. These sorts of bets began with and are especially popular for the Super Bowl. Some of the more popular Super Bowl prop bets include the result of the coin flip, which player will score the first touchdown, and who will be named MVP

Game-related prop bets will include items such as whether there will be a score in the first five minutes, which team will score first, whether the opening kickoff will be a touchback, whether the first score will be a field goal or touchdown, whether there will be a safety in the game, and various player production-related outcomes.

How Super Bowl Bettings Odds Are Calculated

Odds to win the Super Bowl will vary from one sportsbook to the next, and these futures odds change throughout the offseason based on player movement (trades, free agency, and the draft). When the Los Angeles Rams acquired Matthew Stafford, their odds became shorter. When Drew Brees announced his retirement, the Saints’ odds got longer.

The odds also shift depending on how much money gets wagered on a specific team. Sportsbooks protect their interest by encouraging fans to bet one way or another.

When the season gets underway, odds move based on wins and losses and how well or poorly teams are playing. The odds can also change if a key player suffers a significant injury.

Once the AFC and NFC title games conclude, sportsbooks will set the opening line for the Super Bowl. How well both teams are playing, the health of their respective rosters, how their rosters match up, and anything else oddsmakers deem relevant will be used to help set the opening line.

For Super Bowl LV, the closing line for the game was:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers+3.0 (-110)+138O 56 (-110)
Kansas City Chiefs-3.0 (-110)-157U 56 (-110)

The opening line favored the Chiefs by 3.5 points, but as Super Bowl Sunday neared, confidence grew in the Buccaneers, resulting in the shift to 3.0 points.  The vigorish or “juice” on either side of a point spread bet is -110, meaning a bettor has to risk $110 to win $100. Some sportsbooks may offer less expensive vig on the Super Bowl (-105, for example) as an enticement to bet with them.

Those who took the moneyline on the Buccaneers won $138 on a $100 bet. Chiefs fans had to bet $157 to win $100.
