Dramatic LSU-Florida State Ending Denies Over Bettors

When LSU kicker Damian Ramos’ would-be game-tying extra point at the end of Sunday’s season opener against Florida State struck the hand of FSU’s Shyheim Brown) and wobbled to the ground, Tigers fans were left stunned by their team’s 24-23 loss. It was stunning for some bettors as well.

Had LSU converted the PAT, it would have sent the game to overtime and sparked a raucous celebration among not only every fan in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome wearing purple and yellow, but also for anyone who had bet Over 49.5 Total Points.

Instead, the blocked PAT meant that LSU’s frantic comeback had come up just short, and Over bettors were out of luck. A bit of quick math:

  • A successful extra point to send it to overtime would have made it 24-24 (with the total at 48).
  • From there, someone was guaranteed to eventually score at least a field goal that would push the total to 51 and make everyone who had bet Over 49.5 a winner.

Ramos also had a kick blocked in the second quarter. Seminoles defensive end Jared Verse came up with that one. The Tigers’ extra attention on him appeared to help free up Brown for the pivotal block as time expired.

While the rest of the game would have likely played out differently had Ramos’ second-quarter kick gone through the uprights, it was another instance of an LSU special teams error weighing heavily on the final score.

A Hectic Finish

The late LSU touchdown and missed extra point were hardly the only source of drama in the final minutes. The Tigers appeared doomed after a muffed punt gave Florida State possession inside the LSU 10-yard line with 2:15 left. But a Seminoles fumble set up LSU for the long touchdown drive that all but tied it up.

Given the halftime score of LSU-Florida State was just 7-3, Over 49.5 bettors will long remember watching the chaos that nearly made them winners, only for the PAT block by Brown to deny the rally from 10 total points at halftime to 47 total.

ACC Atlantic drama

The missed extra point by LSU meant that two ACC Atlantic teams won Week 1 games thanks largely to late kicking errors by their opponents. On Saturday, NC State survived its matchup at ECU on a missed field goal by the Pirates as time expired. Minutes earlier, the Pirates had missed the extra point that would have tied the game at 21-all with 2:58 remaining.

In NC State-ECU, though, Under 51.5 was going to cash regardless of the outcome of the would-be game-winning field goal.
